Building a Viking Longship!

In Eagle Class, the highlight of our term was definitely our Viking Longship Day. The aim of the day was to learn about the construction of longships and have lots of fun at the same time. We spent the day working in groups of four with Mr Humber to build a wooden replica of a ship. We began by building a frame that needed to be sanded and painted. Next we cut pieces of wood, and using a drill and screw drivers we constructed the frame. Finally, the last group cut out strips of thick material which we stapled on to simulate the sides of the ship.

On Friday we handed the longship on to Falcons, who completed the project by adding a sail, dragon’s head and shields. During the day we were also tasked with building a small boat out of paper, card and whatever else we could find. We tested them out in a water tank - some ships sank within seconds, whereas a few stayed afloat for hours!
