School Council visit the Houses of Parliament
x

"Pastoral care is strong. Staff ... share the headteacher’s commitment and determination to make sure the school is a ‘safe haven’ and that all pupils feel safe and are well cared for."

On Wednesday 12th July, Arifah, Samuel, Raegan and Sophie represented our school on a visit to the Houses of Parliament. Along with the other Stevenage Parliamentarians, we travelled to Westminster and (once through the thorough security system) entered this historic building.

We followed in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth II up the stairway towards the House of Lords, passing through magnificent corridors embellished with incredible paintings of the Battle of Waterloo and the Battle of Trafalgar. Our tour guide explained the purpose and history of each of the three parts of the Houses of Parliament: The House of Lords, The House of Commons and the Monarchy, how they interact and how our political system works. We then went on to take part in a debating workshop, where after much discussion, we chose ‘Socks and sandals should be banned’ to debate!

As we were doing this, the real Members of Parliament were in the House of Commons, just a few rooms away with Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn giving their conflicting and contrasting opinions, during Prime Minister’s Questions. We were thrilled by the experience, and it is certainly one that they will always remember and treasure.
