  • Christmas!
    We really got into the Christmas spirit in the last week of term. On Wednesday, many of us helped to organise our School Christmas Dinner, setting-up the Hall, making sure all the decorations were set and helping to serve Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1. After that, we got to tuck into our own Christmas Dinner, complete with crackers and paper hats - and as we were all in our Christmas Jumpers too, it felt very festive! On Thursday, we rounded-off the term with a brilliant Christmas party. We changed into our finest party clothes and headed into the Hall for an hour of games - including all the classics (musical chairs, pass the parcel, musical statues etc), along with a few new contests (including the hotly contested cereal box game). After that, it was time to pile into party food (a big thank you to everyone who sent something in). We had a great afternoon, and it was a lovely way to finish off the term.

  • Reading Week
    We started the term with a Spooktacular Book Week. We got to meet two authors who were very different, showing us that you don’t have to be a certain ‘type’ of person to become a good author. Gareth P Jones explained how he writes songs about his characters to help him to understand them better and improve his writing. Megan Rix, meanwhile, brought in a special guest to show us what inspires her to write - her golden retriever assistance dog, who has appeared in many of her stories. We also completed a series of book-related challenges around the school and wrote about our favourite stories, all of which meant that many of us won some fantastic prizes!

    Throughout the week we took part in Buddy Reading sessions, sharing books with children from other classes. We rounded off the week with our Book Swap (where we traded in books we’d grown out of for something fresh) and Big Read, where we settled down for a nice long read in our pyjamas.

  • County Final Football
    Our Girls Football Team finished last half-term with an incredible win (on penalties) in the Stevenage Tournament, and as a result they qualified to represent the town at County Finals, run by Herts FA. With two key players unavailable, it was a really challenging morning, playing almost non-stop for 2 hours against some very strong teams - but the determination, teamwork and resilience shown by the girls was an absolute credit to them, the squad and the school, and meant that they finished in fourth place in the whole of Hertfordshire!

  • Our Christmas Fayre
    Our Christmas Fayre was a huge success! Over 400 children, parents and family members attended, playing games, buying lots of home-made craft, visiting Santa, eating, drinking and generally having a lot of fun! As a result, we raised over £900 for the school, which School Council will be able to spend on some of the ideas that they have come up with to make our school an even nicer place to be. A huge thank you to everyone who donated food and gifts or helped to organise events.

  • RAF Hendon
    As our topic this term has been The Battle of Britain, we spent a day visiting the RAF Museum in Hendon. We had the opportunity to see real World War Two planes whilst learning about the development of aviation over the past 100 years. During our trip, we also took part in a fantastic workshop where we tested our coding skills, as well as our reaction times. We learnt about the skills that are used every day by real pilots to enable them to fly incredibly high-tech RAF aircraft. As well as massively supporting our topic work, our trip to the RAF Museum also supported our work on explanations in English, as we were able to apply our new-found understanding to explain how Spitfires and other World War 2 aircraft worked and why they were so effective during the Battle of Britain.

  • Hertfordshire Table Tennis Finals
    After winning the Stevenage Sporting Futures Festival earlier in the term, our Girls Table Tennis Team also qualified for County Finals, and at the start of December Sara, Daniele, Annie and Arifah headed to Edge Grove School to take on the best players in Hertfordshire. Unsurprisingly, the competition was exceedingly tough, but the girls showed great determination once again, making it as hard as possible for their opponents to secure points against them. Taking on the number 1 ranked player from each school, Sara recorded an impressive record of 4 wins and 2 losses, while Daniele (taking on the No. 2 players) secured 5 wins and just one loss. All of this meant that we finished in fifth place in Hertfordshire - another amazing achievement!

What we've learnt about this term:x

  • English
    Last half-term, we explored our first non-fiction genre of the year - explanation writing. We began by learning a model text, looking at how World War 2 aircraft worked, and explored the language and structure of this text. We investigated a range of other explanation texts, too, identifying common features (and key differences) found across them. As we developed our understanding of this tricky genre, we identified a ‘toolkit’ of features to use in our own writing, including, the use of causal conjunctions, technical vocabulary and structuring our work so that the reader is engaged and interested. We completed our unit with the ‘Invent’ phase. At this point, we are ready to write independently, and are given the freedom to choose what to write about.     It has been a long and strenuous day. Dr Watson, my trusty sidekick and I have been set a new investigation, the case of: The Missing Christmas of 1897...this case occurred unexpectedly, as the year had been going well, moreover there were not many major crimes committed. On the date of 24th December, many families were in the merriest of spirits and hundreds of children went to bed praying for the gifts they had wished for. But to their surprise, they mysteriously woke to find all homes across England were stripped of any form of gifts. Most of the time I sit upon my armchair with pipe in hand pondering and presuming that there was a fault in Santa’s workshop. This case is mind draining to the fullest and that is why I have taken it into my duty to investigate Santa’s place of work.

    HOW DO SANTA’S ELVES CREATE CHRISTMAS?
    Christmas is here! Thanks to Santa and his elves mankind have treasured this holiday for centuries. These individuals work tirelessly day and night to bring happiness through: handmade presents; running Santa’s workshop; and finally, preparing his state-of-the-art sleigh. It is widely believed that Christmas is such a merry time; thanks to the elves.

    STEPS OF THE PROCESS
    Situated at the North Pole, Santa and his elves run a frantic workshop. Using nanotechnology the elves wrap and make an abundance of gifts with the help of innovative technology. These machines operate using a distinctive energy source. The machines are linked to sensors, - placed on the ceiling - which are responsible for the movement and making of numerous gifts. Having reached the minimum production point of 4,000 gifts the sensors will power up and significantly improve the manufacture rates, as a result of this the will specifically allocate them into their specialised jobs such as: present makers, letter collectors, spy elves and technical staff. As a spy elf, they must set out - early in the year – to spy on children scouting and surveying their lives trying to spot good deeds. Once that is done the letter collectors’ objective is to retrieve (in a team of 15 elves) all the letters around the world. Technical staff handle any electric issues that occur, and as a result the making of Christmas will be in full swing. If any elves fail in their tasks Christmas would be a disaster therefore that is why elves are crucial in the creation of Christmas.

    ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
    Once the gift process is complete the elves will then start to maintain the workshop as well as Saint Nick’s sleigh, by running take-off and landing runways. They will also renew any technology that is currently malfunctioning. As a result of this Santa’s sleighs (nearly all the time) looks brand new. Reindeer staff is responsible for the welfare and caring of the sleighs most important part... the reindeer. Father Christmas’ reindeer are highly trained, disciplined animals that obey any command given to them. Most elves are exceedingly good in what they do; and that is why Christmas is such a great holiday!

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
    In conclusion, of this marvellous way of creating Christmas, the prospect of such a joyful holiday is imminent. Thanks to the elves, Santa is able to travel from house to house in just 12 hours; therefore the presents can be efficiently delivered. Once the presents have been dispatched, Santa will finally return with his empty sack and the whole process will restart. What a way to deliver Christmas!

English:
We’ll be returning to fiction writing next half-term, being introduced to a story called The Last Princess, set in a tiny room looking out over the Paris rooftops. We will begin by learning key sections of the text, so that we can use the structure and language in our own writing. We will then move on to reading it “as a reader”, answering comprehension questions, using drama to understand character feelings and exploring the use of flashbacks in the text. We will then draw all this together in order to innovate on the original and create our own version of the story. Throughout the term we will also be using weekly Reading Booster sessions to help us to improve the way we approach comprehension tests.

Maths:
Our targets for next half-term will focus on properties of number, identifying multiples, squares, cubes, factors and prime numbers - which means that times table knowledge will be vital to us this term, so regular practice at home will be incredibly useful. In addition, we will be focussing on scales, practicing counting in fraction and decimal steps and learning to read markings on a variety of measuring devices. We will also learn to find percentages of quantities. Later in the term, we will be learning to calculate the area and perimeter of shapes made from rectangles and investigating the properties of quadrilaterals.

Science:
We will be investigating the way that micro-organisms, plants and animals are classified, whilst finding out about the history of classification. This will involve learning about the work of the pioneering biologist Carl Linnaeus as well as using and devising our own classification keys to sort and organise living things.

Humanities:
Next half-term will focus on geography, looking at capital cities around the world - particularly Paris, London, Mexico City and Washington DC. We’ll be learning about what it’s like to live and grow-up in each of these cities, the types of homes people live in and the jobs they do there. We’ll be trying to work out why each city became (or was chosen as) the capital, and looking at similarities and differences between these four places. We’ll finish-off by planning new capital cities of our own.

In RE, our next topic will see us investigating how different religions express and celebrate their beliefs through art, drama and song.

The Arts:
We will be investigating food from around the world, making and comparing dishes from the countries we are learning about, and thinking about the reasons why different foods and types of cookery became popular in different countries. We will also think about the place of different types of food in a healthy diet.

  • Marriotts Visit
    At the beginning of July, we were invited to go to Marriotts School, to attend a ‘Humantopia 5 Live’ workshop. Humanutopia have been working with Marriotts for the past three years and the project involves recruiting Year 9 Heroes, who are then trained to work with younger year groups. Five primary schools from Stevenage were invited for the day, with 140 Year 5’s and 100 Heroes working together, completing group activities and playing games to promote teamwork and confidence.

  • Hockey Festival
    In the penultimate week of term we put the sunny weather to good use with our Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament. We headed out onto the playground, where we were split into teams of 4 and ran through the rules before getting stuck into the action. For the vast majority of us, this was the first time we had ever played competitive hockey, so the tactics and pace of the game took a bit of getting used to - but by the time we reached our second and third group games, we were into the swing of things, and the performance levels (and scoring) started to shoot up. After break, the top two teams in each group went through to an elaborate knockout system. As there are no goalies at our age group, there are no penalty shoot-outs - which meant that some of the games had a lot of extra time. However, eventually the team of Harvey, Nathan, Jimmy and Hannah won through to become our first champions!

  • Chessington Trip
    Our day got off to a slightly dodgy start when our coaches got stuck in traffic, which led to us leaving 40 minutes or so later than planned - but fortunately, once we got moving we whizzed down the motorway and were soon at the theme park. Once inside we split into groups and headed off towards the fun! Fortunately, the queues were mostly tiny (and in some cases non-existent) and as a result we crammed in as many rides as possible. Some of us also chose to check out the famous zoo, (and an awful lot of us were keen to go on the Gruffalo ride, too!) It was great to see so many of us overcoming our fears and strapping ourselves into some of the scarier looking rollercoasters, including Dragon’s Fury and Rameses Revenge (and getting very soggy on some of the wetter rides, too), and by the time we clambered back on the coach that afternoon, we were exhausted but very, very happy!

  • PGL 2017
    Some of us were fortunate enough to go away for the weekend to the PGL activity centre at Marchants Hill in Surrey. Throughout our time there we participated in a whole host of new experiences including: raft building, zip wire, giant swing, trapeze (leaping off the top of a post and trying to catch a bar or kick a giant ball) and an incredibly muddy ’challenge course’ (which saw us getting absolutely filthy!) Everyone had a fantastic time, with some of us conquering fears and challenging ourselves to climb, jump and fall further than we ever had before!

  • The Easter Journey
    On Thursday 23rd March, we were invited to visit St. Andrew’s and St. George’s church to build on our understanding of the Easter journey. We have been following the events that led up to Jesus’ crucifixion during our assemblies, and this visit allowed us to gain a greater knowledge of how the disciples felt and what they did as individuals.

    Taking part in different scenarios (such as the Last Supper, the washing of feet, Judas’ betrayal and the resurrection) taught us to consider events from an alternative point of view, and we finally pieced together a jigsaw that showed different aspects of Jesus’ journey including loyalty, humility, sacrifice, love and faith.

  • Macbeth
    Earlier this year, Year 5/6 were fortunate enough to not only watch, but take part in a performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The world-famous play was brought to us by The Young Shakespeare Company and through a lively presentation, we were able to follow and understand this age-old story.

  • Life in the Amazon
    This half term, we have been learning all about life in the Amazon Rainforest. We have learnt about a variety of animals that live there (such as: cheetahs, piranhas, sloths and tree frogs) and were then able to produce a fact file including the information we had researched. As well as this, we explored the arguments for and against deforestation and then produced a balanced discussion before coming to our own conclusions. In addition to all of this, we have produced pictures of animals from the Amazon, inspired by the work of the artist Nick Gustafson. A collection of these pictures can be seen below:

  • English - Persuasive Writing
    Our ‘hook’ into this term’s writing saw us climbing, scaling, balancing, dodging and retrieving gems in a spy inspired agility course! From this we were able to think of the different skills and attributes it takes to become a secret agent. Once we had identified proficiencies such as stamina, dexterity, intelligence and co-ordination, we then went on to exaggerate these talents and flatter our chosen audience as we applied for a job with one of the world’s top spy agencies. Along the way, we also explored the features of persuasive writing, looking at the way we can use exaggeration, rhetorical questions and evidence to make our arguments more convincing - all of which we drew together to produce our final application forms.   • Computing
    Using our new found knowledge of different superheroes, we created challenging quizzes for the other class and published them online by using the website Survey Monkey. Class 9 created questions relating to Iron Man, and Class 10 devised their quiz about Batman. Once we had completed the survey, we collated the responses and will be analysing the results in the coming weeks before presenting the data as charts and graphs, using Excel software.   • Science
    We have begun to explore the different forces that impact upon our planet. Our focus so far has been mainly on gravity, investigating the discoveries of one of the most famous scientists in history, Sir Isaac Newton, and learning how gravity is measured using a Newton Meter. We took part in a practical lesson where we measured the amount of gravity acting on various classroom objects, such as bags, shoes, pencil cases and even a chair. Our focus going forward will be to look at levers and pulleys and the forces acting upon them. Additionally, this term everyone in Years 5 and 6 took part in a relationships workshop, and all of the adults involved in the sessions were thoroughly impressed with the mature way in which we handled this topic.

Save Our Planet!

English:
Our next English unit will see us returning to story writing, this time focussing on Warning Stories - where the main characters are given a warning, ignore it and then have to face the consequences of their actions... Our model story is based around an adventure on frozen-over Fairlands Lakes, so we will begin by visiting the Park to explore the setting, collect descriptive language and act out our own version of the text, all of which will help to get us ready to write. We will also be investigating the use of reported and direct speech in stories, and the way that characters can change throughout a text. Once we’ve done all that, we’ll finish by independently writing Warning Stories of our own.

Maths:
Our maths targets for the next half-term will focus on fraction calculations. We will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, using equivalent fractions to support our working and simplifying answers where possible. Key to this knowledge is quick recall of tables facts, so we will continue to practice our times tables every day, and be tested on them individually every week. Later in the term we will also be looking at the properties of 2d and 3d shapes, grouping these in a variety of ways and learning to change their position through reflection and translation. We will also learn to calculate the area and perimeter of a range of shapes.

Science:
We will be investigating the way that light travels, exploring what happens when it hits a mirror and how shadows are formed. We will begin to learn how our eyes and brains work together to allow us to ‘see’ things, how cameras work and how rainbows are formed. We will also put our knowledge to practical use by building periscopes.

Humanities:
We will be investigating the impact that humans are having on our planet and thinking about how we are changing the world - for better or worse. We will be investigating energy production, the oceans, mining and recycling, and identifying ways in which we can protect our planet against damaging change. We will also look at the way people around the world are being affected by (and reacting to) climate change.

The Arts:
In DT we will be investigating recycling, learning how to create new paper from old and comparing the properties of new and recycled materials . We will then focus on the way we could improve recycling in our school, designing and constructing recycled replacements for classroom equipment which we will test-out and evaluate.
