Crocus Plantingx

"Pupils develop kindness and consideration for those experiencing difficulties, for example by collecting clothes for the children in Syria."

Year 5 were invited to support Stevenage Rotary Club as part of a national campaign to eradicate polio around the world. Joined by members of Stevenage Borough Council - including the Mayor - they headed down to Fairlands Park to plant purple crocuses on October 24th.

The flowers are a symbol of the international efforts to tackle polio, an infectious disease which can cause muscle weakness, inability to move or even death, but which can be prevented with a vaccine. Because of vaccination, it is now only found in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. When children are immunised, their finger is marked with purple dye, which is why the flowers that Year 5 planted were purple.

Hopefully the area in the Park around the bandstand will be full of purple reminders of this important campaign when Spring arrives.
