  • Christmas!
    We rounded-off the term with a brilliant Christmas party on Tuesday 18th December, including loads of silly (and hotly contested) games and an awful lot of eating - a big thank you to everyone who donated party food, and a Merry Christmas to you all from all of us in Year 3/4!

  • Christmas Fayre
    Our Christmas Fayre was a huge success! Over 400 children, parents and family members attended, playing games, buying lots of home-made craft, visiting Santa, eating, drinking and generally having a lot of fun! As a result, we raised over £900 for the school, which School Council will be able to spend on some of the ideas that they have come up with to make our school an even nicer place to be. A huge thank you to everyone who donated food and gifts or helped to organise events.

  • Reading Week
    We started the term with a Spooktacular Book Week - a fantastic week full of games, treasure hunts and reading. We got to meet two authors who were very different, showing us that you don’t have to be a certain ‘type’ of person to become a good author. Gareth P Jones explained how he writes songs about the characters in his stories to help him to understand them better and improve his writing. Megan Rix, meanwhile, brought in a special guest to show us what inspires her to write - her golden retriever assistance dog, who has appeared (along with lots of other amazing cats and dogs) in many of her stories. We also completed a series of book-related challenges around the school and wrote about our favourite stories, all of which meant that many of us won some fantastic prizes!

    Throughout the week we took part in Buddy Reading sessions, sharing books with children from other classes. We rounded off the week with our Book Swap (where we traded in books we’d grown out of for something fresh and exciting) and Big Read, where we settled down for a nice long read in our pyjamas.


What we've learnt about this term:x

  • English
    This half term we have been writing a Science Fiction story, based on our class text Alien Landing. There was a mysterious 24 hour period in our stories, where the main characters lost their memories. Our task was to complete the story writing what happened within that period.

    The unit began with great excitement as we came in one morning to find a crater on the school field, inside were pebbles covered in some form of luminous pink goo. Rumours of different ways the crater had appeared and what the pebbles were for spread round the playground quickly during break. However after much speculation, we came to the conclusion that aliens had landed and left these unknown objects, which introduced our text, Alien Landing. Over the next couple of weeks we learnt how to write a science fiction story using scientific vocabulary, time openers and short impact sentences to add excitement.

    We finish each writing unit with an ‘Invention’ phase, where we draw together everything we have learnt to produce an original piece, working completely independently. Below you can see the Invention story written by Kenzie Cole:

    Suddenly a piecing beam of fiery light emerged from the space craft. It blinded the boys. Blistering heat made Tom and Jez pass out, they were now in extreme danger. Moments later their bodies rose from the ground and travelled silently towards the waiting U.F.O. The light had picked them up as if by magic. When the boys were on board, the ship shot into the sky, leaving a trail of dust and debris behind it.

    Tom woke first, he heard what sounded like talking but not in any earthly language he had heard before. It made him feel very nervous.

    “Jez wake up!” he called. “There’s someone at the door.”

    At that second, a group of aliens appeared, carrying a large device. The device was placed over each boy and it appeared to scan their bodies. During the scan, Jez woke up dazed and confused. After, the aliens began to ask each boy questions about Earth, and how their bodies functioned. Neither boy wanted to answer but somehow they couldn’t control their responses. It wasn’t long until the aliens had what they wanted and left the room. Tom and Jez looked at each other but, before they could talk, the room turned pitch black except for a corner of the room which glowed blue. As they approached, the lights stared back, like a pair of staring eyes. The boys slowly crept towards it, scared of any danger. The moment Tom touched the light the room began to spin. Their hearts were beating wildly. It was then that they found themselves back in the forest with no memory of what had just happened. They collapsed to the floor.

Our Spring Term Topic:

Our focus text for the next half-term will be report writing. We will be using the world of dragons for inspiration, beginning by learning a model text taken from Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon which describes what a particular dragon eats, where it lives and what it looks like. Following that, we will take a closer look at the structure of the report, thinking about the way that headings, sub—headings, topic sentences and relative clauses are used to organise the text. We will also use the text to develop our understanding of more complex punctuation. We will then use the structure of our model report as the basis for our own writing, building-up to independently creating our own reports on other mythical creatures.

Next half-term, we will be turning our attention to exploring space, shape and measure. We will begin by looking at both 2D and 3D shapes, describing their properties, classifying and grouping them in different ways and using our knowledge to solve problems. We will then move on to learn how to measure the area and perimeter of different 2D shapes. Finally, we will develop our understanding of measures, using standard units to record the length, weight and volume of objects. We will also continue to develop our tables knowledge, with Mrs Thomas’ group working on their 5x table, Mr Humber’s maths class focussing on the 6x table, and Mr Hollingsworth’s set brushing-up their 8x tables facts.

We will be investigating the way in which living things can be grouped, using terms like vertebrates and invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. We will then be exploring the way that keys can be used to help us to identify and name living things in our local environment. We will finish by thinking about the way that environments change over time.

Our focus for the next term will be the Anglo-Saxons. We will begin by placing them on a timeline, relating them to other periods and civilisations that we have already learnt about, before investigating their origins, including where they came from and why they invaded Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries. We will identify the areas where they settled and discover the effect that they had on the lands that they moved to, particularly spreading Christianity and the first creation of an English nation. Finally we will discover what life was like for these warrior farmers, including investigating how they lived, what they ate and what it was like for young Anglo-Saxon children

The Arts:
Next term we will be exploring the construction of strong structures in DT. We will be investigating the design of Anglo-Saxon Round Houses and discovering how they were built and the reasons why these buildings were particularly well suited to the people who lived in them. We will then use this knowledge to construct model round houses of our own.
